Write a horror poem. Except I don’t really do horror. Never liked horror movies–the closest I’ve ever come to liking one was “Shaun of the Dead.” Even monster movies didn’t do anything for me as a kid, and today’s torture porn? Ugh. No thanks.

But it turns out I did have something to pull from for this poem. Let’s just say this poem hits a little closer to home than most.

Horror

Never good when the ex calls,
not once the kid is grown
and the divorce is twice as old
as the marriage. Never good
to hear that the kid’s ex
was just arrested for murder,
and that the victim was two
years old, child of the girl
he’d been cheating on the kid
with, the kid he’d talked about
wanting to marry. Never good
to realize that when you were
the kid’s age, you were just dumb
enough to do it, because you
believed lust was sin, and you
couldn’t bear to burn alone.

  1. I’m taking it as “dumb enough” to do any or all of the above sins coming from the lust, even the murder?

  2. I was going for “dumb enough to get married,” because I was referencing, very obliquely I guess, the admonition from the Apostle Paul that it’s better to marry than to burn. Too much of a jump?

  3. I like it… “the divorce is twice as old as the marriage” crack… and those last two lines… my mom has told me that, its better to marry then burn, but ima burn for murder if i get married… lose.. lose… lol
